Item THE CORRELATION BETWEEN NUTRITION, PLAQUE AND GINGIVITIS(2013-07-17) SITI RAIHANA BT SHEIK ALAUDIN; Tidak ada Data Dosen; Tidak ada Data DosenNutrition is one of a few factors which may influence periodontal health. The purpose of this research was to observe and assess the correlation between an individuals nutritional intake and its effect on gingival health and plaque accumulation. The research was an epidemiological cross-sectional, single-blind study with a clinical examination component. Thirty students (4 males and 26 females) from Faculty of Dentistry UNPAD KPBI, aged between 21 and 26 participated in this study. The study involved participating in a nutritional survey which involved filling up a diet questionnaire regarding their food intake for the past one month. The survey results were analyzed and the extent of gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation were assessed using the Gingival Index (GI) by Löe & Silness (1963) and the Plaque Index (PI) by Silness & Löe (1964) respectively. The correlation between nutrition, plaque and gingivitis were statistically analyzed by using a multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that both the extent of gingivitis and plaque accumulation were significantly affected by the level of ones nutrition and hence showed a correlation between nutrition, in particular fruits and sugars, plaque and gingivitis. From this study, it can be concluded that there is indeed a correlation between nutrition, plaque and gingivitis.
