Abstract
This thesis entitled “Illocutionary Acts of Mood in Someecards: A Systemic Functional Linguistic Study”. This thesis is conducted to describe and analyze the kinds of mood and speech function in Someecards and the kinds of illocutionary acts relating to mood and speech function which can be found in Someecards. This thesis employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristic of descriptive study. This view as suggested by Pearson (2002), in a qualitative research, a single phenomenon of interest is researched then being stated in a purpose statement. The data are obtained from Someecards which is a free online electronic cards service (E-cards) produced by Brook Lundy and Duncan Mitchell in 2006 available in http://www.someecards.com and http://www.instagram.com/someecards edition January 2017 until May 2017. Moreover, the data collected are analyzed by using framework of the theory of functional grammar proposed by Halliday (2014), and Gerot and Wignell (1994). Further, the data collected also are analyzed by using the theory of illocutionary acts from Deterding and Poedjosoedarmo (2001), and Downing and Locke (2006). The findings reveal that there are Mood and Direct Illocutionary Acts and Mood with Indirect Illocutionary Acts found in Someecards. Further, the data description describes that there are four kinds of mood found as mood and direct illocutionary acts. They are declarative mood as statement, interrogative mood as question, exclamative mood as exclamation, and imperative mood that can express an expression of giving directive, Further, the data collected shows mood with indirect illocutionary acts. They are declarative mood that can express an expression of giving directive, declarative mood as exclamation, and interrogative mood as exclamation. Those data collected indicate the mood with the variation of speech function found in Someecards.
