HEDGES IN WORLD UNIVERSITIES PARLIAMENTARY ENGLISH DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Abstract

This thesis is entitled “Hedges in World Universities Parliamentary English Debate Championship: A Pragmatic Study.” The data collected from the video-recording on Youtube where address is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKM0ISiAX7o. ). The data were converted manually into the script on May 2016.The method used in this data is descriptive. The purpose of this research was to analyze the types of hedges appear in 2016 World Universities Debating Championship and to describe the roles of hedges to appear in debaters’ utterance. The researcher used some theories from Prince et al (1982), Ken Hyland (1998), Bruce Fraser (2010), Brown and Levinson (1987) and Lakoff (1972) in which all of them were to explain about “hedges.” From the conducted research there obtained the results which is in conclusion, “hedges” that are frequently to appear at The Grand Final Round of Thessaloniki World Universities Parliamentary English Debate Championship is the type of “Plausibility Shields,” that is, to indicate Sense of Own ‘Speaker-Oriented’ in Debating.
