PREVALENCE OF UPPER AND LOWER THIRD MOLAR IMPACTION IN PATIENTS WITH ANGLES CLASS II DENTO-ALVEOLAR MALOCCLUSION

Abstract

The aim of conducting this research is to obtain the prevalence of the upper and lower third molar impaction among patients with Angle’s class II dento-alveolar malocclusion visiting the Orthodontic Department of Rumah Sakit Gigi Dan Mulut Sekeloa, Bandung from the year 2011 to 2016. The type of research conducted was a descriptive research. The sampling was purposive, drawn from a population of Angle’s class II dento-alveolar malocclusion totaling 32 panoramic radiographs taken from the year 2011 to 2016. The 32 samples that were included in the survey ranges from the age of 18 to 29 years old. The position of the third molars were assessed using Winter’s Classification of third molar impaction. The prevalence of impacted third molar in Angle’s class II dento-alveolar malocclusion in this study is 96.88%. Of the impacted third molars, the most common was four impacted third molars (53.125%) followed by two impacted third molars at 15.625%, three impacted third molars at 18.75% and one impacted third molar at 9.375%. The maxillary third molar impaction stands at 47.47% of all impacted third molars whereas the mandibular impaction is at 52.53%. According to Winter’s Classification, the most common angulation of impaction in this research is the mesioangular (46.46%) followed by the distoangular impaction (29.29%) and followed by vertical angulation (18.18%). Based on the present study, the prevalence of the impaction status of the Angle’s class II malocclusion patients visiting the Orthodontic Department of Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut is 96.88%.
