Abstract

This thesis entitled “Thematic Progression in Narrative Writings of 6th Grade Students in Islamic International School Bandung: A Systemic Functional Linguistic Analysis”. The objective of this study is to analyze and describe the Thematic progression and types of Theme in students’ narrative writings. The research is conducted based on theory of Thematic progression: Bloor and Bloor (2004) and Theme system Halliday and Matthiessen’s (1994); Gerot & Wignell (1994) and Halliday et al. (2004). The data sources are taken from collection of students’ writings. The method and technique used in this research are descriptive qualitative. In terms of the Thematic progression pattern, the finding showed that the use of Constant pattern is dominant in the Complication and Resolution of all writings’ achievement categories. It implies that the students could organize the focus by repeating the same element as Themes in the next clause, as a result, the writings tend to focus on the specific participant. The dominant use of Linear pattern in Orientation of low achievement implies that they can organize the given-information to develop relations between clauses. Zero occurrence in Split Rheme pattern and Derived pattern might imply that students of PrimarySchool tend to write in simple Thematic progression. In terms of types of Theme, the findings showed that all writings’ achievement categories have shown the use Interpersonal Theme in type of modal adjunct, finite and vocative; the use of Textual Theme in types of structural conjunction, conjunctive adjunct and continuative. Meanwhile, in types of Topical Marked Theme, low achievement writings have shown the use of Topical Marked Theme in type of adverbial phrase. Middle achievement writings have shown the use Topical Marked Theme in types of adverbial phrase and complement. High achievement writings have shown the use of Topical Marked Theme in types of adverbial phrase, complement and process. Topical Themes is the most frequently used in narrative writing, followed by Textual Themes, and the least is Interpersonal Themes. These types of Theme are found in narrative writings of all achievement categories. The Topical Themes represents the students’ ability to introduce the characters and setting in narrative writing, the Interpersonal Themes help the students to build a relationship between characters in dialogue, and the Textual Themes contribute to connecting the logical relationship between clauses to build cohesion and coherence in the text.
