Introduction: The mastication efficiency varies with the increase in age. Mastication dysfunction may influence cognitive impairment. In this research, the mastication efficiency in cognitive impairment is described. Methode: The population sample consist of 54 elderly male and female who are aged 60 years old and above using cross-sectional sampling. The data was collected in Kelurahan Dago, Bandung. Cognitive function of the subjects were evaluated using MMSE and categorized into normal (26-30), mild (20-25), moderate (10-19) and severe (0-9). Colour changing chewing gum and number of masticatory cycles were used as an assessment for masticatory efficiency. Results: The results showed that 75.93% were of normal cognitive with an average masticatory cycle of 145.78 ± 24.77. Mastication efficiency in cognitived impaired elderly are such that mild (18.52%) has an average masticatory cycle of 138.30 ± 35.26 and moderate (5.56%) at 119.67 ± 59.50 and severe at 0.0%. Subjects with normal MMSE score has an average delta E of 42.22 ± 6.17, mild cognitive impairment has an average delta E of 41.11 ± 5.38 and moderate cognitive impairment has an average delta E of 43.77 ± 31.06 and severe at 0.0%. Discussion: Elderly population with cognitive impairment has a lower number of masticatory cycle and a lower delta E value. Conclusion: In conclusion, the highest delta score and masticatory cycle is from the normal cognitive function, followed by the mild, moderate and severe cognitive impairment.
