ABSTRAK
Penelitian terhadap tiga novel karya Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms dan For Whom the Bell Tolls, ini menyajikan hubungan laki-laki dan perempuan yang dilihat dalam konteks kajian maskulinitas melalui penggunaan teknik penceritaan,yaitu suara dan karakterisasi dalam upaya menunjukkan dominasi yang dilakukan laki-laki terhadap perempuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjabarkan bagaimana kedua teknik penceritaan tersebut, yang dikaji melalui teori naratologi Chatman, dan dilihat dalam konteks kajian maskulinitas yang diajukan Alice Ferrebe, menunjukkan upaya dominasi yang dilakukan laki-laki terhadap perempuan untuk mencapai kesuksesan hubungan dan maskulinitasnya. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, hubungan laki-laki dan perempuan yang disajikan dalam ketiga novel ini menunjukkan kegagalan jika dilihat dalam konteks upaya pembentukan maskulinitas tokoh laki-laki.

Farewell to Arms, and For Whom the Bell Tolls, presents the relationship of men
and women seen through the context of masculinity studies operating through the
using of narrative technique namely voice and characterization in indicating the
domination which is done by the man to the woman. This thesis aims to show how
those narrative techniques which is examined through Chatman‟s narratology
theory and seen through the context of masculinity studies by Alice Ferrebe show
the efforts of domination which is done by a man to a woman to attain the success
of relationship and the masculinities. According to the analysis, the relationship
of men and women presented in these three novels shows failure, seen through the
context of aiming the attainment of men masculinity.
