Bugis Language of Radio Variety in La Ugi Program

Abstract

This sociolinguistic study on Bugis language of radio variety in La Ugi Program aims to analyze the language elements and the sociolinguistic phenomena with their accompanying factors in the Bugis language of radio variety in La Ugi program. It focuses on the sociolinguistic exposure of the object of the study (linguistic data of a Bugis-spoken radio program). The design of the study employs a qualitative method, a descriptive analysis, and a sociolinguistic approach supported by some quantitative data presentations in the analysis. The data collection consists of observation (recording) and interview as addition to the previous one based on Sudaryanto (2015: 207 – 208). The data analysis usingMiles and Huberman (1992: 16) involves the classification, reduction, and conclusion/verification. The result of the study shows that Bugis language of radio variety reflects the Bugis language daily spoken by Bugis people, observed through its various changes in relation to the sociolinguistic phenomen a as the effects of the language contact and bilingualism spoken by Bugis individuals. Thelanguage elements aspect indicates that Bugis language has some special characteristics, covering: (1) articulation, particularly its suprasegmental phonemes and strong glottal stop, (2) morpho-phonological constructions, and (3)phrasal, clausal, and sentential constructions considered different from the other languages including Indonesian language. The Bugis sociolinguistic phenomena of radio variety in La Ugi program clearly demonstrate some forms of language mixture in terms of various code-mixing, clausal and sentential code-switching, loanwords/borrowings referring to interference and integration, and some other language variations engaging with the socio-cutural background of the users.
