SOCIAL STRUCTRUE OF HMONG PEOPLE IN BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA

Abstract

This research is about exploring Social Structure of Hmong people. The location is in Brisbane Australia. There are 2 purposes in this research; this research used Participatory Action Research as Methodology in doing this research, which researcher spent 3 months lived in Hmong community in Brisbane to surveyed, participated and talked with Hmong people to collect data for this research. The informants of this researcher are Hmong religious or belief leaders, president of Hmong Australian Associations, Hmong Pastor, Hmong clan leaders, and Hmong elders, and people who have power in the community, furthermore researcher also talked with Hmong Australian villagers in the pattern of oral talk to collect data. The data is analyzed through mentioned theories, and others document which has been done by other prior researchers. The result of research demonstrated that Social Structure of Hmong people in Australia consists of many small institutions and organizations that hold Hmong Australian together as a society such as Hmong Australian Association (HAA), its main purpose is to collect money from all Hmong in Australia if a person dies. Moreover it also works to help Hmong people when they need help, and promote Hmong culture, language and identity. In Brisbane, Majority of Hmong belongs to the Yang clan, so most of Hmong Brisbane sons and daughters have to marry outside Brisbane with different clan. Mainly, the wedding is in Hmong traditional style, while some convert to western style. A bride price is around $3000 dollars AU. Before wedding is held, Hmong council (usually elders in Hmong community) will hold a meeting to talk about the relationship between the bride and groom clan first if there’s unsolved problem, it must be solved before the wedding begin, if the problem can’t be solved, the wedding has to be canceled. Around 70% of Hmong Australian believes in Hmong traditional belief (animist). Shaman and herbalist are essential to Hmong Australian. Hmong Australian also believes that dreaming is a sigh telling what’s happening in the soon future. 30% Hmong Australian believes in Christianity. Education is important for living in Australia, but not much Hmong Australian achieved high education.
