Abstract
ABSTRACT
Batu Hijau Mine – PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara is one of the largest open pit
copper-gold mine that located on the South-West Sumbawa Island as part of the West
Sumbawa Province. This island is product of the subduction tectonics plate between
Indo-Pacific and Australia. The impact on the above condition was reflected
difference in complex geological structure such as fault zone and intensive joints
which is influence to the rock mass quality associated with the mineralization zone.
According to the pit slope design philosophy at Batu Hijau Mine, potential of
pit wall failure has identified as one of the highest event that can be disrupted into the
overall mine operation. Therefore, prediction of pit slope failure event using slope
stability monitoring data and combining by visual observation result at the field is
one of the key successfully to ensure safely working area for workers and mining
equipment.
Predict time of failure by involving any various internal and external factors
that can be triggered into pit wall failure will give an accurate of the analysis result.
Therefore, determining constant ‘K’ value as one of the important variable in the
formula of predicting pit wall failure will more reliable and closer to the actual
condition.
Based on the result of analysis was indicated that rain fall, rock mass rating
(RMR), and slope geometry have a significant correlation with the constant ‘K’
value. This meant that the three factors as mentioned above should be used as a
reference for determining reliable constant ‘K’ value adapts to pit wall condition.
In order to give details guidance for using of constant ‘K’ value in predict
time of failure analysis, the result of research was developed distribution of domain
constant ‘K’ for each pit wall block. By considering to the factor that influenced to
constant ‘K’ value as mentioned above, any adjustment of K value for determining
reliable time of failure is acceptable.
