THE ROLES OF SOCIAL WORKER IN FLOOD DISASTER MANAGEMENT IN DAYEUHKOLOT DISTRICT BANDUNG INDONESIA

Abstract

ABSTRACT Social work profession has long been involved with disaster management. In this study tried to discover the roles of social worker of pre, during and post flood disaster management of Dayeuhkolot community of Indonesia.The study was conducted from 2015 to 2017 in Dayeuhkolot district, Bandung, Indonesia This study was qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. The primary source of data was collected from informant through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, formal and informal discussion, and observation. Informents were selected purposively. Meanwhile, secondary data sources were collected from books, journals, and various Internet sources. The result of the study shows that the roles of social worker in the pre-disaster phase is limited and insufficient are educator including socializer and awareness building, enablerincludes;community capacity building, trainer includes; acquiring training and delivering training, advocate, researcher includes; mapping, community development worker and mediator, during-disaster stage roles are more efficient and perfect are catalyst includes evacuation and search and rescue, advocate includes creating support group, facilitator for fund raising, outreach for social service provider and community health worker, supervisor, volunteer and coordinator and in post-disaster period roles are also limited and insufficient are refugee worker, therapist, mediator, environmental worker, community mobilizer, referral worker, advocate, facilitator & researcher. Social worker are playing these roles sponteniously but sometimes they are facing problems like; limited worker for large population, lack of practice expriences, acquaintance of social work profession and they are recoving their limitation from seniors and experts. They are rewarded by community people, government through metarial and non metarial assets. In Indonesia has no but little application of social work knowledge in disaster management while their government policy recognize wellbeing of every citizen of country. So government should apply social work knowledge in every setting of flood disaster management for welfare of the nation.
