Abstract
ABSTRAK
Tujuan penulisan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana lembaga perkawinan digambarkan dalam tiga novel karya Edith Wharton yaitu The Age of Innocence (1920), House of Mirth (1905), dan Ethan Frome (1911) melalui sudut pandang para tokohnya. Lembaga perkawinan ini memiliki keterkaitan dengan kelas sosial yang mengakibatkan para tokoh yang menjalani lembaga perkawinan tersebut mengalami pengasingan. Penggambaran lembaga perkawinan pada ketiga novel ini dianalisis melalui teknik narasi yang dikemukakan oleh Seymour Chatman dalam bukunya Story and Discourse : Narrative Structure in Fiction and Film (1980) dengan menggunakan komponen-komponen seperti suara naratif, plot, dan karakterisasi. Pembahasan tentang lembaga perkawinan ini dianalisis berdasarkan atas teori yang dikemukakan oleh Hegel dalam bukunya Philosophy of Rights (1821). Berikutnya, permasalahan tentang kelas sosial dan keterasingan dianalisis berdasarkan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Karl Marx dalam bukunya Economic and Philosopic Manuscript of 1844. Hasil penelitian ini adalah narator memiliki cara pandang yang berbeda terhadap lembaga perkawinan pada setiap novel. Pada The Age of Innocence, narator bersikap sinis terhadap lembaga perkawinan yang ada. Pada The House of Mirth, narator bersikap setuju terhadap lembaga perkawinan yang ada walaupun tidak sepenuhnya setuju. Sedangkan pada Ethan Frome, narator bersikap simpati. Selain itu, lembaga perkawinan digambarkan dalam tiga novel ini sebagai alat untuk mendapatkan keuntungan di masing-masing pihak.
ABSTRACT
The aim of this thesis is to analyze how marriage institution is described from characters’ point of view in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (1921), House of Mirth (1905), and Ethan Frome (1911). Marriage institution is related to social class which make the characters suffer the alienation. The depiction of marriageinstitution in the three novels is analyzed through narrative techniques; narrative voice, plot and characterization, proposed by Seymour Chatman in his book Story and Discourse: Narrative Structure in Fiction and Film (1980). The discussion of marriage institution is analyzed based on the theory advanced by Hegel in his Philosophy of Rights (1821). The issue of social class and alienation are analyzed according to the theory by Karl Marx in his Economic and Philosopic Manuscript of 1844. The result of this study is the narrator has different point of view about marriage institution in every novel. In The Age of Innocence, the narrator shows his sarcasm about marriage institution in it. In The House of Mirth, the narrator agrees about marriage instituion in it, eventhough does not fully agree about that. And in Ethan Frome, the narrator shows the sympathy about marraige institution in it. Besides that, marriage institution is become a tool to get a profit for each party who exists in it.
