EXPORT COMPETITIVENESS AND THE DETERMINANTS OF EXPORT IN THE INDONESIAN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY

The automobile industry is one of the industries with fast-growing export and high value-added products, but the competitiveness is still below its neighbouring country. This thesis attempts to investigate export products of the Indonesian automobile industry with HS code 8702, 8703, 8704, 8705, 8706, 8707, and 8708 from 1990 to 2018. The investigation is divided into two steps: First, reveals the competitiveness of the products by using RCA and RSCA index in the world and the ASEAN level; Second, analyzes the export determinants by employing OLS regression. RCA and RSCA indexes of the industry show that Indonesia does not have enough competitiveness in the world level while in the ASEAN region, it still has competitiveness even though mild. From OLS regression analysis, FDI inward stock, world demand, and exchange rate are the significant determinants on automobile export performance while FDI openness, the 1998 Asian crisis, and the 2009 global crisis do not affect export performance.
