Item Characteristics of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Among Padjadjaran University Students, West Java, Indonesia(2023-07-14) ADINDA SALSABILA PUTRI; Eka Surya Nugraha; Dimas Erlangga LuftimasBackground: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition due to reflux of gastric content which result several symptoms. Due to their behavior and lifestyles, university students typically have a higher risk of developing GERD. GERD Questionnaire (GERD-Q) is a validated instrument that can be used to diagnose GERD. This study was aimed to know the prevalence of GERD among University Students and characteristics of practices-associated GERD in GERD group. Method: This study was a cross-sectional study in Padjadjaran University, West Java, Indonesia. Proportional random sampling was used in order to data collection. Instruments that used in this study were GERD-Q, general characteristic questionnaire, food frequency questionnaire, AUDIT-C, and Brinkman Index. Results: Of 221 students, the prevalence of GERD was 19%. On average, they only ate macronutrients 1-2 times each day. Over half of them (52,4%) ate sweets at least four times every week. The majority of GERD group reported the following habits: skipping breakfast (54.8%), having a late-night snack (57.1%), eating quickly (61.9%), eating food that was excessively hot (73.8%), and reclining down after eating (71.4%). About 40,5% of them were classified as overweight and obese group, 11,9% were classified as alcohol drinkers, and 16,7% were classified as active smokers. Conclusion: The prevalence of GERD among undergraduate university student was found high. Several practices-related GERD were found in the majority of the GERD group. Therefore, health-promoting actions is needed. Future research may focused on non-healthcare student population.
