Knowledge, Perception, and Attitude about Autopsy among Adolescents in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia

Abstract

Autopsy examination is an important examination of the corpse. Autopsy is considered as the gold standard for confirming or ruling out the diagnosis and it has an important role in promoting public health. However, the prevalence of autopsies has decreased dramatically worldwide in recent decades. The society, especially adolescents, need education about the urgency and benefits of autopsies. Adolescence is an important period in forming a person`s mindset towards everything, which affects their decision-making ability about autopsies in adulthood. This research was conducted to determine the level of knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes of adolescents about autopsy, especially in the city of Bandung. This cross-sectional descriptive observational study of the knowledge, perception, and attitude of adolescents was conducted in the city of Bandung during the period April to June 2023. Three hundred and eighty-four respondents, from the age group of 15-18 years, were randomly included in this study. After written informed consent, respondents filled out a questionnaire containing questions about knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes. The collected data is presented as a percentage in tables. Most of the respondents (67.70%) were female and live in Sukasari Subdistrict (14.06%). In total, there are 184 (47.91%) people had inadequate knowledge, 170 (44.27%) had adequate knowledge, 286 (74.47%) people had a positive perception, and 226 (58.85%) people has a approved attitude. However, 34 (8.85%) people did not agree to do an autopsy on their relatives or family to determine the cause of death. Respondents as a whole showed slightly inadequate knowledge, positive perceptions, and accepting attitudes. However, there are still some people who show inadequate perceptions, and attitudes about autopsies. It is suggested that the government improves public knowledge through various activities and programs to increase the prevalence of autopsy.
