IMPACT OF PHYSICAL EXERCISE ON MUSCLE MASS CHANGES IN STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THE OUTDOOR CLUBS BASIC TRAINING AFTER 7 WEEKS EXERCISES

Abstract

Background: Regular physical activity, including aerobic and strength training, is essential for maintaining physical health and may result in increased muscle mass. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of physical exercise on changes in muscle mass in student’s who participated in the basic training program of an outdoor club. Methods: This was an observational analytic study of 20 male and 30 female college students who joined basic training of students outdoor club. Data collection was performed from May to June 2022 in Jatinangor, Sumedang, West Java. Data of muscle mass assessed by bioelectrical impedance analyzer and processed using the formula to determine the muscle mass index (MMI). The statistical analysis was processed using paired t-test with normal distribution of data. Results: In both male and female subjects, there was an increase in MMI, with a mean increase from 10.1 to 10.4 kg/m2 for males and 9.0 to 9.5 kg/m2 for females. Furthermore, there was a significant increase in the average profile of MMI in both subjects between the pre and post measurements after seven weeks, with a p-value ≤ 0.050. Conclusion: Physical exercise increased muscle mass in both, male and female subjects.
