EXPLORING LOCKER ROOM TALKS AND MALES SOCIAL IDENTITY; A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF YOUNG ADULTS MALE WITHIN THE YAKULT FRIEND GROUP

Abstract

Not desire, certainly not romance. “Locker Room Talks” that is popular within the homosocial bonding encompasses disrespect towards women as it contains misogynistic contents that are endorsed through jokes and comments directed towards women. Amidst the homosocial bonding that acts as a platform for the underlying phenomena, it has come into surface that homosocial bonding is a form of the applied hegemonic masculinity within the males. In that regard, by using a qualitative study and a phenomenological approach, this research will be exploring the manifestation of hegemonic masculinity within the homosocial bonding to understand the effects it brings towards the male identity and the collective norms that prevails towards the underlying phenomena that occurs within them. Hence, to gain narratives and evidence of males` intrapersonal experience in the occurrence of the underlying phenomena, an in-depth interview will be conducted along with the theory of Social Identity. The expected outcome of this research is to reveal the males view towards “Locker Room Talks” and the extent of the attained behavior due to the existence of Hegemonic Masculinity in the homosocial bonding.
