Nigella sativa is often used as a natural remedy for some diseases. Nigella sativa is known to have many active substances. The volatile oil of Nigella sativa contains the substances: thymoquinone, dithymoquinone, thymohydroquinone, thymol, and tannin which are considered to inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Infectious disease is still one of a major health problems. Candidiasis is a mycotic infection caused by members of the genus Candida. About 70% of all human Candida infections are caused by Candida albicans. Candidiasis are include superficial (cutaneous or mucosal) infection and systemic infection. This research is aimed to know the antifungal effect of Nigella sativa oil towards Candida albicans. The study was done by descriptive laboratory study. The experiment is done to determine the inhibition zone of Nigella sativa against Candida albicans using Modified Kirby Bauer Susceptibility Test method. Continue with determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Fungicidal Concentration (MFC). The result shows inhibition zone on the Sabouraud agar of Candida albicans. The mean diameter of inhibition zones are 11.0 mm, 11.7 mm, 12.0 mm, 13.0 mm, 13.7 mm, 14.8 mm, and 15.3 mm for Nigella sativa concentration of 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%,80%, 90% and 100%, respectively. In the MIC and MFC tests, the procedure cannot be done and the results cannot be obtained because the fungal suspension cannot be mixed homogenously with the Nigella sativa oil. The result shows that Nigella sativa oil has an antifungal effect on Candida albicans.
