Item REPRESENTATION OF MUSLIM IMMIGRANTS IN EIGHT ARTICLES IN THE NEW YORK TIMES DURING THE PRESIDENCY OF BARACK OBAMA (2013-2017) AND DONALD J. TRUMP (2017-2021): A CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS(2021-03-17) ANGGI RIZKY FIRDHANI; Rosaria Mita Amalia; Lia Maulia IndrayaniThis research entitled “Representation of Muslim Immigrants in Eight Articles in The New York Times during The Presidency of Barack Obama (2013-2017) and Donald J. Trump (2017-2021): A Critical Discourse Analysis”. The data of this research are news articles published in The New York Times that have topics related to Muslim immigrants. To limit the amount of data, the author chooses news about Muslim immigrants published in The New York Times in the last two terms of the presidency in the United States, namely Barack Obama`s presidency (2013-2017) and Donald J. Trump`s presidency (2017-2021). The objectives of this research are to describe and analyze the discourse strategies used by The New York Times in representing Muslim immigrants during the presidency of Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump, and to describe how Muslim immigrants are represented during the presidency of Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump. The analysis of this research was done by using qualitative and descriptive research methods proposed by Nassaji (2015). This study uses the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by Van Leeuwen (2008) as the grand theory and uses the theory of text analysis offered by Richardson (2007) as the supporting theory. The result of this study show that The New York Times used inclusion strategies more often in representing Muslim immigrant, during the presidency of Barack Obama and Donald J. Trump. The result of this study also shows that Muslim immigrants in The New York Times are represented negatively, both during Barack Obama`s presidency and during the presidency of Donald J. Trump. This negative representation is realized by using words with negative connotations, positioning Muslim immigrants as passive objects, and by using inclusion strategies, especially genericization and indetermination.
