Item THE ALLOPHONES OF /t/ OF SUNDANESE EFL LEARNERS: A PHONOLOGICAL-PHONETIC STUDY(2021-06-10) JERI SUKMAWIJAYA; Susi Yuliawati; Sutiono MahdiA phoneme /t/ is considered to have eight allophones. The allophones occur in certain word environments. The existence of the allophones of /t/ can be predicted by paying attention to the surrounding speech sounds. The allophones of /t/ can help EFL learners speak English better. This study aims to describe the spectrogram and waveform of allophones of /t/ produced by Sundanese EFL learners and to find out the duration and intensity of allophones of /t/ produced by Sundanese EFL learners. This study uses quantitative and qualitative method (mix method). The data are gained from voice recording of eighteen undergraduate students. They are all native Sundanese speakers that are learning English, so they are called as Sundanese EFL learners. The data are analyzed and measured by acoustic analysis by using PRAAT software. The result of the spectrogram and waveform analysis shows there are seven allophones of /t/ produced by Sundanese EFL learners, they are [t], [th], [t̚ ], [ɾ], [ʃ], [tʃ], and [∅]. It is also supported by the finding of the duration and intensity of the seven allophones of /t/. Based on the result, the [t] is the most frequently produced, it emerges in the seven word environments. The participants can also produce the flap [ɾ] as one of the typical American pronunciation. This finding may contribute to the phonological and phonetic field and also other researchers who want to know the allophones of /t/ and their acoustic measurements of Sundanese EFL learners.
